We're creating a safe and secure future

The Council for Responsible Social Media is at the forefront of fostering a safe, secure, and responsible digital ecosystem for the African society. Our comprehensive strategy integrates high-impact policy advocacy, the cultivation of pivotal strategic partnerships, and targeted stakeholder capacity development. We ensure our interventions are evidence-driven through rigorous research and, when necessary, leverage strategic litigation and other targeted actions to drive systemic improvements and build a trusted online environment across Africa.

We're holding Big Tech accountable

While Kenyans have embraced the benefits of social media platforms, there is growing evidence of big tech harms, including online financial scams, online gender-based violence, the spread of disinformation and hate speech, conduits for radicalization and extremism, misogyny and the unchecked rise of the manosphere, and the targeted advertising of harmful products. These harms are ubiquitous in our online spaces, even though they violate the platforms' own terms of service and content moderation guidelines.  Therefore, Big tech in Kenya and Africa must be held accountable for these pervasive issues and must be obligated to provide the same rigorous standards of duty of care and user protection that are afforded in other regions, such as Europe and the United States. African users are unequivocally entitled to this parity of treatment.

Partnerships

The Council for Responsible Social Media brings together eminent leaders from different sectors of society who work together to secure a safe and equitable digital future for the African society by addressing digital harms from social media and emerging technologies. Some of the sectors represented in the Council include education, health, peace & security, governance and media. The Council also invests in partnerships with like-minded international organizations and networks. As such, the Council is a member of the Global Coalition for Tech Justice and sits on the Steering Group.
